The technology of creativity, innovative design discipline rooted in Science and Engineering

Architectural Technology

Architectural Technology is a creative, innovative design discipline rooted in science and engineering. At its core, is the anatomy and physiology of a building or structure, its relation to context, how it is assembled and how it performs through form, function and fabric. Architectural Technology achieves efficient and effective construction and robust sustainable design solutions that perform and endure over time.

Course Highlights

The learners on successful completion of the course can register to The Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists which is the qualifying body for Architectural Technology as a Professionally Qualified Architectural Technicians, TCIAT (Technician member of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists), or as a MCIAT (Member of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technicians).

The Professionally Qualified Architectural Technicians, TCIAT (Technician member of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists) specialize in the application of technology in architecture and are an integral supporting part of the design team specializing in the research of products, processes, legislation and technology as well as detailing, designs and drawings.

The Chartered Architectural Technologists, MCIAT, (Member of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technicians) are qualified to offer design services and manage projects from inception to completion and lead the technological design of a project; forming the link between concept, innovation and realization. They work closely with architects and other building professionals, providing architectural design services and solutions on construction projects. As specialists in the science of architecture, building design and construction, they negotiate and develop an architectural project and manage the process from conception through to completion. This includes architectural design management, contract management and post-construction work.

Architectural technicians/technologists also evaluate and advise on refurbishment, repair, reuse, recycling and deconstruction of buildings. An architectural technologist has a broader range of skills than a technician, and will contribute more to the design and construction process, including contract management, certification and post-construction work.

The SQA Advanced Diploma in Architectural Technology will provide learners with a sound understanding relevant to the field of architectural technology of scientific construction principles and practices. It will enable students to achieve the skills associated with aspects of design and drawing coupled with the knowledge and ability to produce building materials specifications for projects. The programme will also introduce quantity-surveying aspects associated with the construction and building industry, including costing, estimating and contract procurement methods.
