Education as an investment in—not a drain on— the local economy

January 8, 2024All great civilizations had one thing in common – great cultivation and great reaping from education. Education was instrumental in preserving the values of these great civilizations. Education had been and always would be the fulcrum of advancements in societies, social structures and human capital besides innovations, discoveries, inventions and explorations. What we have today that leaves us awestruck in literally any domain be it medicine, engineering, communications or computing to name a few were all built brick by brick with the support of wise men and women of those ages. If equity and adequacy in cultivating and propagating education were not maintained in those ages, then probably we would not have reached this far.

As parents, we want our children to go to good schools where they learn all the life skills besides a quality education to succeed in their lives. How we brought up our children must not be a limitation to their success in life. As a nation, we wish to have an advanced educational system which would attract students internationally. Good educational system produces good and ethical citizenry, instills good morals, scruples and principles that we wish in our value system as a nation or even for the world at large. Just imagine living in a society or a nation where every of her citizens are ethical, of good morals, bearing good principles and advancing human prosperity and lives through good technical knowledge and skills would be akin to saying that we live in a paradise.
Investing in education has always reaped benefits much more: exponentially and in exponential terms. Why exponentially? Because it is just not only the technical and soft skills that is received through education but also the life skills and the combined savings occurring through good citizenry is much more than the output of any additive law. Those savings can be channelized to give better lives to the community, individuals and the households. Firms could better their productivity through educated and well-trained labor market and increase their output ushering in greater profits which means greater taxes for the government and increased wealth for the shareholders of the firm.
Investing in education for all, is the wisest decision one can take to further the prosperity of any community. It is of paramount importance, therefore, that the office bearers of the school attach unduly significant thought to invest further in education and that such an investment will never be a drain on the local economy.
Denying education to a section of public is detrimental to the society at large including us as a part of the society. Moreover, if children do not occupy themselves in education, then the chances are more that they might occupy themselves in things not too good for any society or neighborhood. Inadequacy will eventually lead to inequity. I guess, we all got the answer to our question: why should we pay taxes to fund a public education when we do not utilize it. The other side of the coin is more the students get educated to the tertiary levels, more they will foster shared prosperity, pay taxes to the government and will not be dependent on any support systems. Likewise, the government saves money in several other areas.
Such is the might of a good education!
